Management Essentials

Before we actually get to dissecting human resource management, it makes sense to understand what Management as a discipline is. On the onset, Management involves the setting of organizational-level goals and allocating the company’s resources to achieve them.

In another sense, Management can be defined as the process of managing people, assets and resources to efficiently and effectively reach set goals.

Primary Functions of Management – Just Four

This entire process of Management can be further broken down into functions – just four of them.

First off is Planning. This is when the organization’s upper-tier management, sometimes in collaboration with the lower-tier employees, establishes long term goals for the firm.

Next, is Organizing, or breaking down these goals further into activities that are then divided amongst departments, teams, divisions and even regions.

Most important, is the third function – Leading. This makes sure that the teams and departments allotted a goal, are motivated to continue achieving set goals, and have someone lead the way if they happen to lose focus.

Finally – Controlling. This function ensures activities are continually being monitored to ensure goals set by the organization, are met.

So, where does HRM come in, again?

With the Management process laid out this way, you’d assume HRM is a secondary, sometimes thing. That is wrong. With the complex nature of the business environment and constant change in external and internal forces, the management process is not conducted in a vacuum.

There are complicated laws that change from region to region, whilst the very nature of the traditional job is changing in geographical dimensions. The world has progressed to a global work space and the labor pool is no longer limited to an area, or site or city or country.

Competitors, governments, regulations – all of these are becoming more and more important. Strategies that are forward-thinking assist in predicting and bracing a company from such changes.

HRM manages the “people” part of the equation: the most valuable, the most fluctuating but in the end, the most important cog that helps organizations get the job done.
